MORE INFO ON THE FLU
Can I get influenza even if I get vaccinated this year?
Yes. The vaccination’s effectiveness varies from year to year. If the vaccine doesn’t perfectly match the particular Influenza strain that year, you can still get the “flu”. Also, in some people, the flu shot doesn’t result in a sufficient immune system response to provide protection against the virus. But those people who do get influenza after being vaccinated often have a milder case than those who are not vaccinated.
What’s all this talk of a Pandemic?
In 1918, something they called the “Spanish Flu” caused an international influenza epidemic that infected about 20% of the world's population. About 500,000 people died in the U.S. alone.
Today, with frequent airline travel linking the global community a new strain of influenza could travel around the world in a very short time. Scientists fear that the current “bird-flu” problem in Asia might one day spread to America and other western nations – causing another 1918-like Pandemic.
